Homenagem ao poeta açoriano Hernâni Candeias
Morreu a 24 de Abril Hernâni Candeias, natural do Pico mas criado em São Jorge, residente na Angra da sua alma há décadas, militar reformado, poeta (publicou alguns dos seus poemas neste jornal), declamador, cantador ao desafio em rodas de amigos, pintor, homem de convicções e coração de manteiga, fustigado duramente por vicissitudes da vida mas sempre resistente. […] Na tarde de 25 de Abril, a urna em que repousava chegou ao destino final coberta pela bandeira nacional. Uma formação do RI 17, a casa durante décadas, prestou-se honras militares. Oficiais do seu exército e outro das forças militares norte-americanas também lá estavam. […] Chovia, mas quando o padre acabou a bênção, foi-se a chuva e veio sol.

Hernâni Candeias died on April 24. A native of Pico but raised on São Jorge, a resident for decades in the Angra do Heroísmo that anchored his soul; a military veteran, poet (he published some of his poems in this newspaper), reciter of poetry, singer of desafios among his circle of friends, painter, man of convictions with a heart as soft as butter, battered hard by life’s vicissitudes but always resilient. […] On the afternoon of April 25 [41st anniversary of the Carnation Revolution], the casket in which he lay arrived at its final destination, covered by his nation’s flag. A formation from Infantry Regiment 17 (Castelo de São João Baptista), his home for decades, accorded him full military honors. Officers from his Army and another from the U.S. military were also there. […] It was raining, but once the priest finished his benediction the rain let up and the sun came out.

Contemplação
Como que pintado e adormecido
sobre as águas deitado ao sol!
O gigantesco dinossauro esmorecido
De peito arfando, como um fole…
Bela a fera, tarde se levanta,
move-se pelas lagoas e beleza das fajãs!
De pálpebras semi-cerradas ainda encanta
pelo nevoeiro adentro das manhãs…
O Astro-rei, seu maior aliado,
aquece e vai dourando o dorso forte!
Segreda-lhe de longe que é amado;
e que resistirá pelo tempo e à morte.
Mas a Lua que o namora do céu
pelas noites quentes dos verões
diz-lhe que a tristeza do espesso véu
que o cobre, desperta a ira doutros dragões…
E o dinossauro que se escorrega pelas encostas
e espreita pelos rochedos abruptos de sonho!
Não ouve a apaixonada e vira-lhe as costas
com aquele ar impassível e esgar enfadonho…
Sussurra-lhe, pela estrada prateada da Lua,
Sobre as águas, pertença do dragão!
Que a ilha toda não é minha, nem tua
é apenas o sonho, a que deu o coração…
Lacerda, pela pa[u]ta, ergueu o sonho pelo mundo
Leandro Silva compôs o sonho cantante da ilha!
Páginas imortais do sonho até ao fundo,
dum profundo fundo, pasmado de maravilha…
Contemplation
As though painted and fallen asleep,
sunning himself in the waters,
the gigantic listless dinosaur lies,
his chest puffing like a bellows…
The beautiful beast rises late,
moving through the lagoons and beauty of the fajãs!
With eyelids half-shut he still enchants
through the morning fog…
The Star-King, his greatest ally,
warms and shines golden on his strong back!
He confides from afar that he is loved;
and he will endure throughout time and unto death.
But the Moon that, from the sky, woos him
during hot summer nights
tells him that the gloom of the thick veil
which shrouds him stirs the other dragons’ ire…
And the dinosaur that slides over the slopes
and peers through the steep cliffs of dreams
does not hear his beloved and turns his back to her
with that impassive air and dismissive gesture…
He whispers to her, along the road lit silvery by moon,
above the waters that are the dragon’s realm,
that the whole island isn’t mine, nor yours
it’s only the dream to which he gave his heart…
Lacerda, with music staves, raised the dream throughout the world
Leandro Silva composed the island’s vocal dream!
The dream’s immortal pages, down to the depths,
to the deepest depths, amazed by wonder…
