“Seeing comes before words. The child looks and recognizes before it can speak” (John Berger Ways of Seeing, 1972)
The photo essay by Carlos Enes (in the previous section) depicts an historical view of the Holy Spirit tradition in Terceira as well as São Jorge islands. The photos portrayed in this segment were taken recently (2009) by Jorge Góis in São Jorge island.
Comparing both photo images (the selection by Enes and this one), we recognize certain differences in the celebration of a tradition that has captured the Azorean soul for many generations. These visuals remind us that the representation of the real and existing things, such as the Holy Spirit celebrations in the Azores, may not only constitute the mere survival of yet another tradition, but indeed the endurance of an ideological form signifying the realization of the values, beliefs and modes of thought, posing unique challenges for the means of expression.
