A DIFERENÇA QUE HÁ
A diferença que há entre os estudiosos e os poetas
é que aqueles passam a vida inteira com o nariz num assunto
a ver se conseguem decifrá-lo, e estes
abrem um livro, lêem três páginas, farejam as restantes
(nem sequer todas) e sabem logo o assunto
e que os outros não conseguiram saber. Por isso é que
os estudiosos têm raiva dos poetas,
capazes de ler tudo sem ter lido nada
(e eles não leram nada tendo lido tudo).
O mal está em haver poetas que abusam do analfabetismo,
e desacreditam a gaya Scienza.

THERE IS THIS DIFFERENCE
There is this difference between the scholar and the poet:
a scholar spends his entire life with his nose buried in a topic
to see if he can crack the code, while a poet
opens a book, reads three pages, samples the rest (but not even all of them)
and, right off, understands the matter that the other has failed to understand.
That’s why the scholar hates the poet capable of reading everything
while reading nothing
(the scholar having read nothing while having read everything).
The evil lies in there being poets who abuse their
illiteracy and discredit the Gay Science.
