University of the Azores – Monday, October 29, 2012
On Monday, October 29, the President of the University of the Azores, Dr. Jorge M. R. Medeiros, visited Brock University in order to discuss areas for collaboration and the possibility of partnership.
The Azores is an Autonomous Region of Portugal, and is comprised of 9 islands that were formed by volcanic activity. The University of the Azores was established as a public university in 1976 and has campuses on three Azorean islands.
Throughout the day’s meetings, Dr. Medeiros and Brock officials highlighted several research areas that would be ideal for collaboration, including oenology and viticulture, environmental sustainability and the economics of water, and other areas.
During his visit to Brock, Dr. Medeiros met with the following Brock faculty and staff:

Dr. Michael Plyley, Dean of Graduate Studies
This was the first time that Brock has welcomed a delegation from the University of the Azores. During his visit, Dr. Medeiros was accompanied by Mr. David Tavares, President and CEO of Globetar Systems Inc, a Toronto and the Azores-based company that that designed and implemented Brock’s state of the art EMS system. Mr. Tavares visited Brock with government officials from the Azores in 2009.
